Your gold-medal performance

Rabbi Daniel Lapin relates a story told to him by economist Walter Williams—which I here adapt for a Canadian audience.

Reach into your pocket. Take out a loonie. What colour is it? It’s gold.

If you earned that dollar, you are holding in your hand a gold medal—your reward for a superior performance. If you did not steal it, nor prevail upon a government agency to confiscate it from someone else and give it to you, that dollar is a gold medal you won for meeting someone’s needs.

Professor Williams’ point is that government redistribution of wealth is like any other form of theft: wealth is taken from someone who earned it, and given to someone who did not. The socialist delusion is that this is somehow ‘moral’; but it is really exactly the opposite.

On the other hand, there’s nothing more moral than increasing the world’s wealth by earning some for yourself through meeting the needs of others.

Rabbi Lapin compares business profitability with charity, using this example: suppose you were in need, and ‘Jones’ offered to give you $10. That would be charity. You get $10, but Jones is $10 poorer.

Now suppose’ Smith’ presents you with a business plan by which, if you help him earn $500, he’ll give you $100 of it. You get $100—and Smith gets $400. Is that unjust? No, because he gave you the opportunity—and the dignity—of earning your money; you got ten times as much as Jones’ charity, and everyone is better off.

The point of the rabbi’s story is this: while there’s nothing wrong with charity, the opportunity and dignity of earning your living is better.

But now suppose Smith earns $500, the government takes half and gives you $50; the rest is eaten up by “administrative costs”—salaries for bureaucrats. Smith is less well-off, you are less well-off, and the main beneficiary is the bureaucrat who abused the coercive power of government to redistribute Smith’s wealth.

Socialists often bad-mouth business for benefiting from their good works; they insist, instead, on government redistribution of wealth—but it’s really just theft by government—just as Frédéric Bastiat wrote 250 years ago.

Fair and balanced reporting???
Saturday, August 4, 2007, 01:21 PM - Miscellaneous
Kudos to the mayor of Truro, NS, Bill Mills.

Mayor Mills has refused to fly the gay pride flag because the promotion of this event is contrary to his religious beliefs. He was supported by most of the Town Council.

This CTV coverage failed to provide a balanced view in that only those who opposed the decision were included in the article.

We could assume that there were no supporters of the decision but we already know the Town Council was supportive.

OR

We could assume that the CTV was not concerned with fair and balanced reporting; rather, they were concerned with promoting an agenda.

Our media has long gotten away with using their newspapers/newscasts as a means of social engineering.

Thanks to the internet, and a growing effort to coordinate the use of the internet to tell the full story, traditional Canadians have the opportunity to discover they are not dinosaurs, discriminatory or backward thinking, if they hold views contrary to seeming popular public opinion. These coordinated efforts have revealed that the main stream media have become creators of news rather than reporters of news.

Let's keep challenging the main stream media to either include in their header... "Social Engineering Newsletter" or start to report the news rather than create the news.

HRC Complaint Withdrawn
Saturday, August 4, 2007, 12:17 PM - Justice
The Human Rights Commission Complaint against Free Dominion has been withdrawn.

I delight in the fact that Canadians are free to discuss issues whether their opinions are politically correct or not.

This victory reminds us that, if we want to maintain our basic rights, we need to stand together and confront those who would deny us the freedoms which we love.

Free Dominion website - Human Rights Complaint

Canada's Human Rights Commission Used to Target Conservative Website With "Hate Speech"
Free Dominion website not yet given any details

By Peter J. Smith

OTTAWA, July 19, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Free Dominion, Canadian conservative web forum, has been targeted via the Canada's Human Rights Commission (HRC) over allegations the conservative site promotes "hate speech."

"We have been waiting for six and a half years and the day has finally arrived, somebody is going to try to silence Free Dominion using the Canadian Human Rights Commission," Mark Fourier quipped in posting the letter. "Somebody has likely decided that because they can't defeat some argument presented by someone at Free Dominion they will instead try to silence the whole site. It isn't going to work."

A redacted copy of the letter sent by the HRC has been posted on the Free Dominion website (freedominion.ca) informing the conservative site of the complaint and that it has the option to settle before the investigation proceeds further. (http://www.freedominion.ca/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=84457)

While the right of citizens to exercise free speech used to be a hallmark of free democracies, Canada's Human Rights Commissions have taken to determining what ideas Canadian citizens may communicate with each other or with whom Canadians may freely associate.

Connie Wilkins of Free Dominion spoke with LifeSiteNews.com about the human rights complaint filed with the HRC by a certain"Ms. Gentes" accusing the site of promoting "hate speech" although the HRC has refused to say what protected groups are offended.

Wilkins told LifeSiteNews.com that the HRC claimed it sent the full complaint via Canada Post on June 9 with signature required. However, Free Dominion had received no word of this complaint until yesterday evening, when they received a second letter from the HRC telling them to respond to the complaint of "Ms. Gentes" by July 18, the very day they were required to respond.

After explaining the situation to an HRC official, Wilkins was told only that Free Dominion was accused of "hate speech" under Sec. 13 of the Human Rights Act and that they would resend the original complaint. While the officer said there were specifics in the complaint, he refused to mention them and said they would be found in the original complaint which they should receive Monday.

"It's frightening," Wilkins said commenting on the way the HRC has used allegations of "hate speech" to shut down the viewpoints of conservatives and Christians, such as Christian printer Scott Brockie and other individuals with smaller resources to defend themselves than Free Dominion. (http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2004/apr/04041604.html)

Wilkins explained that Free Dominion (freedominion.ca) is "an online meeting place for conservatives across the country to get together, strategise, plan, and do everything."

"They prefer it when conservatives are isolated from one another and can't talk and organise" to oppose the leftist agenda, Wilkins continued. One Free Dominion project was helping organise Canadians to vote to abolish abortion as the number one wish for the CBC's Great Canadian Wish Contest done in cooperation with Facebook. (http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2007/jul/07070305.html)

"I think the most significant thing about this is how much in the dark we are being kept," said Wilkins. "I mean you would think that if you're being charged with something and there is an allegation against, the first thing that they would do is tell you."

"There have been a lot of people rallying around us already," said Wilkins. "I think that it will be good if people start reporting this and show what the [Human Rights Commissions] do. A lot of Canadians don't realise this. They hear hate crimes laws and think that's a really good thing. They don't understand it's used as a club."

Wilkins said Free Dominion will fight the complaint all the way.

Bill C-22 Age of Consent
Monday, July 2, 2007, 02:18 PM - Morality
Dear friend,

As you might know, earlier this spring the House of Commons passed Bill C-22
which raises the age at which a boy or girl can consent to s-x with an adult
from 14 to 16 years. Since then this important bill has been languishing in
the Senate instead of receiving the fast-track passage it deserves. Now
Senators have decided to commence a three month holiday without passing the
bill, thereby endangering the safety and dignity of the young men and women
as predators continue to exploit these adolescents without fear of legal
consequences.

In response to this we have created an petition asking Senators to either
return to Ottawa and convene a special session of the Senate to pass this
important piece of legislation, or alternatively, to make the passage of
C-22 their top priority upon returning to Ottawa in September for the Fall
Parliamentary session.

This is a non-partisan issue that all Canadians can agree on. Please take a
moment to tell our Senators how important it is to you that they protect our
children by passing C-22 as early as possible by clicking on the URL below
and adding your signature to this petition.

You can also download and print a copy of this petition and have your
friends and neighbours sign it. To download a copy of the petition now go

Finally, in order to obtain the largest number signatures possible, please
forward this email as widely, and post to as many forums and blogs as
possible.
